Cinderella is probably the best-known and best-loved fairy tales around.  The oldest story in time and the most commonly adapted story in history - every girl in the world has hoped for her own Cinderella ending. This production is simply charming.  Jennifer Beals is the sweetest Cinderella ever.  Beals's portrayal is sweet and genuine, but she does not allow her character to appear dumb, as is often the result.

In Mathew Broderick they found the perfect Prince Charming. He's cute, he's swave, he's adorable, and he's charming - I think any girl would gladly run away from the cinders to dance with him at a ball. This production also benifits from having great comic supports. Jean Stapleton's southern lady Fairy Godmother and Eve Arden's crabby Stepmother are the real scene-stealers here.  Edie McClurg also has a great time as one of the stepsisters.  Costuming is great, sets are top-notch and the music perfectly sets the tone to this winning piece.  This production is a treat from beginning to end.

QUOTES:

KING: Hi son, how was the ball? Oh, I know, I hate them too. About ten minutes of that chit-chat, yackity yack, I'm gone. I go out to the kitchen, sniff a little brandy... You ever talk to that chef Jacques? He is a heck of a nice guy!

CINDERELLA: Do you know anything about kissing?
PRINCE: Yes.  I'm almost certain it has something to do with the lips.

CINDERELLA: I don’t mean to be rude, but isn’t this arrangement just a little lopsided?

STEPMOTHER: Oh, well I’m not finished.  Bertha, your duties will include bathing yourself, brushing your own hair, and maintaining an attractive appearance.

BERTHA: See?  I’m not complaining.

CINDERELLA: I'm so embarassed I didn't recognize you!

HENRY: Don't be.  I find it quite refreshing.  I get tired of everyone knowing who I am everywhere I go.  But it's hard to stay anonymous when your face is on all the money.

CINDERELLA: I try to be kind and forgiving, but the nicer I am, the worse you treat me.
STEPMOTHER: Well, think of it as a good deed.

STEPMOTHER: You kiss up to us, we despise you, and everybody is happy.
CINDERELLA: But I'm not happy.
STEPMOTHER: Splendid.

PRINCE: I just wish I knew her name.
KING: You still don't know her name? What have you
been calling her? 'Hey you?'

STEPMOTHER: It's just Cinderella. She's nothing but a nothing.
PRINCE: Madame it takes one, as they say, to know one.

KING: You issue a proclomation. Whatsoevereth slippereth, whomsoever met this - say that you'll marry the girl, whose foot fits this glass slipper.
PRINCE: Yes! That's a wonderful idea!
KING: Of course, that's why I'm king.

MAIDEN: Oh thank you, thank you Prince Henry!
PRINCE: For what?
MAIDEN: For kissing my hand!  I'll never wash it again, thank you!
PRINCE: I guess she liked it.
