Starring Pam Dawber, Helen Mirren, and Laraine Newman.
"How would you like me to show you something in a nice... pair of legs?"
Absolutely the best adaptation of the fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. This production
follows the original story exactly, which is wonderful to see. When Disney adapted the story in 1989 they changed the ending
of the story, which completely misses the entire point to the tale. H.C. Andersen's tale was about how love doesn't always
conquer all. This adaptation understands this message and presents it beautifully.
The cast in this production is top-notch. Pam Dawber makes a sweet Pearl, although her singing
is obviously dubbed. Treat Williams and Helen Mirren are perfect as the Prince and Princess who truly belong together.
Karen Black nearly steals the show with her role as the Sea Witch. Donna McKechnie, Brian Dennehy, and Laraine
Newman all appear in strong supporting roles.
The costumes and sets are very mediocre, but it was the best they could do with their budget. Again,
it's not the sets and costumes, but the performances and the faithfulness to the story that makes this a classic.
