Starring Harry Dean Stanton, Roy Dotrice, and Talia Shire
"Everyone knows Rip Van Winkle."
Well, it's interesting. Rip Van Winkle is one of the
best American folk tales out there, and this is a good adaptation. Visually this is one of the most artistic episodes out
there, and it benifited greatly from the direction of Francis Ford Coppola.
Harry Dean Stanton is one of the best working actors today (my mother happens to be
completely in love with him) and he's clearly enjoying himself here. Talia Shire is wonderful as Wilma Van Winkle and
her part is one of the most memorable.
The story is fleshed out a little more than necessary (I really couldn't care
less if Rip caught a fish or not) but the town sequences are very well done and featured appearances by Roy Dotrice and Chris
Penn. Still, it was the sets and art direction that really made this episode for me.
